Hi, I'm Janet. I believe good things can happen when we learn to use the tools life gives us. But hard experiences can make it difficult for the mind, body, and spirit to work together, and you may feel lost, in pain, or alone.
Our work together is a team effort. I use a strengths-based approach and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you understand your thoughts and feelings and find the tools that work best for you. My work is trauma-informed, so we always go at your pace.
When you're ready, we can sit down, breathe, and I will listen to your story.
Janet earned her Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, in 2010. Her early work in group homes and home visiting programs led her to continue her education.
She earned her Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois Chicago in 2017, and worked as an outpatient mental health therapist until 2024 when she established her private practice Healing Steps Therapy.
Janet offers therapy in English and Spanish. She focuses on anxiety, depression, and trauma, and she is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP).
Through Healing Steps Therapy, she also completes immigration evaluations for asylum cases, extreme hardship waivers, U-Visa, T-Visa, and VAWA cases.

Hi, I’m Janet Pedroza-Ramos, a Licensed Independent Social Worker and the founder of Healing Steps Therapy. I believe that therapy is not about changing who you are or telling you how you should live your life. It’s about having a safe place to slow down, understand what you’re experiencing, reconnect with yourself, and find the tools and support you need to move forward. My approach to therapy is warm, collaborative, strengths-based, and trauma-informed. I believe you are the expert on your own life, and my role is to walk alongside you—not judge you or tell you what you should do. Together, we can explore the things that may be getting in the way of feeling more like yourself and work toward meaningful changes at a pace that feels right for you. I have experience working with individuals and families experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, life transitions, and other emotional challenges. I also have a special interest in supporting Spanish-speaking individuals, immigrant communities, and people who may not always feel seen or understood in traditional mental health settings. I provide therapy in both English and Spanish. As a social worker, I look at the whole person—not just a diagnosis or a single problem. Our mental health can be affected by our relationships, family, culture, environment, experiences, responsibilities, and the things we have had to carry throughout our lives. Because of this, I use a combination of approaches and practical tools, including strengths-based and trauma-informed therapy, cognitive behavioral strategies, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and movement-based approaches. I also believe healing doesn't always happen by simply talking about what hurts. Sometimes we need to reconnect with our bodies, our surroundings, our strengths, and the parts of ourselves that may have gotten lost along the way. This is one of the reasons I incorporate movement and other experiential approaches when they are helpful for the person I am working with. Most importantly, I want you to feel heard, respected, and safe enough to be yourself. You don't have to have everything figured out before you come to therapy. You don't have to know exactly what to say. And you don't have to go through difficult seasons alone. Sometimes healing begins with simply taking a deep breath and the first step. That is what Healing Steps Therapy is about—creating a space where you can take a step, one at a time. Welcome, I’m happy to see you.
We start with what is already strong in you, and use those strengths to help you heal and grow.
Past experiences can show up in the present. I understand how trauma affects the mind and body, so we work at your pace.
We make a treatment plan together. You'll learn practical tools to use on your own, and we'll celebrate the small wins along the way.
